Custom Framing FAQs
What can be framed?
Anything! Two-dimensional pieces like paintings, prints and photographs are just the beginning. Three-dimensional objects like christening gowns, wedding mementos, sports and military memorabilia, and even musical instruments can be shadowboxed, allowing you to display and preserve your special treasures.

What does it cost to have something custom framed?
The cost of custom framing is based on the size of the piece to be framed, the type of moulding, matting and glass used, and any other services needed to frame the piece such as laminating or dry mounting. Our frame staff works with all our customers to create custom framing solutions that work with your budget, and the cost of every job is carefully calculated and approved by you before any work begins.

What do I need to bring to a custom framing consultation?
Measurements of the wall space where the frame will hang are important for designing a frame that fits your surroundings. If possible, bring 2-3 photos showing different views of the room where the new frame will hang — this will show the framer your color scheme, decorating style and scale of furnishings. Paint chips and upholstery swatches are also helpful for coordinating your frame and matting with the colors in the room. And of course, the artwork you would like framed.

Does my art work need glass?
Art on canvas is rarely covered with glass -- exceptions would be canvases that are extremely fragile, valuable, or displayed in places where they are exposed to airborne pollutants. Works in pastel, charcoal and watercolor, photographs, posters and prints all benefit from being framed under glass. Textiles generally do not need to be protected under glass, although there may be many cases where this may be helpful.

What is a shadow box?
A shadow box is a display case made from frame mouldings and used to display unique or three-dimensional art and objects. A single item or a collection of several items can be presented this way. Shadowboxes are an excellent way to preserve and display treasured mementos like coins, military memorabilia, jewelry, masks and sports jerseys, and even those extra-special two-dimensional pieces such as a grandchild's first drawing.
